Mid-managers have to supervise and build their team to ensure quality outcomes for people supported. They “manage down,” meaning they have to set the stage, communicate a vision, and ensure accountability. At the same time, mid-managers must “manage up,” meaning they need to know how to work effectively with their supervisor, other managers, and leaders at their agency. To accomplish both of these feats, a mid-manager needs to know how to work effectively with people. We will discuss the importance of emotional intelligence for managers. We will also focus on how to communicate effectively, even when the topic is difficult.
